The list below contains the radio sources in the VSOP continuum survey project. It includes all sources at 6cm with a flux density greater than 1.0 Jy, a galactic latitude above 10 degrees, and a spectral index greater than -0.5. The list contains more objects than we expect to observe; the flux density limit that will ultimately be used will depend on the performance of the VSOP system and the amount of time that will be available to the VSOP survey. All sources with a flux density greater than 5 Jy at 6cm, regardless of galactic latitude and spectral index have also been included (except for galactic sources). Because of the variability of the sources and the heterogeneous nature of the strong source catalogs, the list is probably no more than 95% complete at any epoch.
Until the VSOP system has been debugged, the system sensitivities have been measured at each frequency, the coherence times (with new techniques) have been determined, and the mix of ground stations are decided, the specific VSOP survey observations cannot be decided. As a rough guideline we expect that:
The VSOP survey observations will be made when there are a limited number of ground telescopes donated to the VSOP survey program in order to extend the mission observing time. Hence, the imaging quality of the survey will be poorer than those of the general observations. Thus, there will be limited or no competition between the VSOP survey observations and those for the General Observing Time (GOT) Projects. On the other hand, if your observations require only rudimentary imaging quality and most objects are already in the survey source list, please contact us (by e-mail to swg@vsop.isas.ac.jp) in order to avoid unnecessary duplication.
Continuum survey results of sources which are being imaged in any GOT project will be made available to the PI of that project as soon as possible. However, only survey data for a source at the frequencies proposed by the GOT project will made available. Because of the limited imaging quality of the survey data, the PI should regard these additional observations as quick looks at the radio source between the proposed GOT observations. The presence of a radio source in the VSOP survey list should not influence your proposed observations and it will have no influence at all in the judging of its scientific merit.
The source list was generated from the Parkes-MIT-NRAO source list for the south and the GB87 survey for the north. North of 70 degrees declination, Kuhr's list of sources was used. The spectral indices for the PMN source list have been recently measured. For the northern sky, the caltech NED data base was used to determine the spectral index of the sources using the best and most recent 2.7 GHz flux density (or 1.4 or 8.1 GHz values). Because of variability the spectral indices, especially for the northern sources, may be in error for some sources.
There are 370 sources in the Survey Working Group source list. These are listed in the table below. An (*) means a total flux density > 2.0.

In June 1996 the VLBA observed all VSOP survey sources at 5 GHz north of -43 deg declination in order to determine which in the sample were sufficiently unresolved for VSOP observations. Only sources whose correlated flux density on an 7000 km baseline (Mauna Kea to Saint Croix) greater than 0.4 Jy are included in the Obseravation List for actual VSOP observations. The weaker sources are still in the VSOP survey source list, but will not be observed with HALCA because of the strong probability of a non-detection. A few sources have been added (steep spectral index or close to the galactic plane) which were not in the original sample above.
