Hinode Instruments - EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS)

EIS has sensitivity ten times as high as the ESA SOHO instrument. It utilizes an off-axis parabolic primary and a toroidal diffraction grating in a normal incidence optical layout with high-reflectance Mo/Si multi-layer coatings. The multi-layer coatings have high reflectance in two wavelength ranges, 170-210 A and 250-290 A, and these wavelength ranges are simultaneously observed with two large back-illuminated CCDs. Many EUV emission lines from the transition region, the corona, and flares are contained in these wavelength ranges and observers can select the number of spectral windows up to 25 in the imaging area of two CCDs. A slit/slot exchanger at the prime focus of the primary mirror contains two narrow slits (1arcsec & 2arcsec width) and two wide slots (40arcsec & 266arcsec width). EIS will provide monochromatic images of the transition region and corona at high cadence using a slot. High spectral resolution images can be obtained by rastering with a slit.

EIS will be able to response to XRT's trigger. In addition it will have internal triggers - a flare trigger and a brightpoint trigger. It will also be able to have automatic exposure control for the slots.
