****************************************************** PR # 11043 The origin of millisecond pulsars still remain mysterious. Direct proof of the standard spin-up by accretion hypothesis, the detection of pulsations from LMXBs,is still eluding us.The soft Xray transients (e.g. Cen X-4) are supposed to be LMXBs in their last phase of evolut ion and are expected to contain spun-up millisecond pulsars. If so,dur ing quiescence the millisecond pulsar should be able to ward off accr etion, offering us an opportunity to directly see the millisecond pul sations. A study of the X-ray spectrum, the X-ray flux (proportional to mass transfer rate), radio & X-ray pulsar searches & optical obser vations offer us the most direct constraint on the properties of the putative millisecond pulsar. ASCA time is being requested as a part of a multi-wavelength effort. ******************************************************
