****************************************************** PR # 11060 Since their discovery, two decades ago, gamma ray bursters have remained an enigma. A subset, the soft gamma ray repeaters (SGR), are widely believed to be associated with Pop. I objects. Recently we have identified an SNR, G10.0-0.3, within the narrow localization of SGR1820-06. Based on this and the previously claimed association of SGR0526-66 with SNR N49 we speculate that SGRs are highly magnetized young neutron stars.Given the paucity of clues, further investigation of G10.0-0.3 and also two SNR candidates in the SGR 1900+14 localiz- ation is clearly desirable. We request ASCA time to detect X-ray emission from the SNR and possible pulsations from the putative pulsar. Inparallel, VLA observations of these candidates are being carried out. ******************************************************
