****************************************************** PR # 11085 We propose to conduct a systematic survey of bright normal spiral galaxies. We chose thirteen galaxies whose total X-ray flux is expec ted to be bright enough that ASCA can study the nature of X-ray emis- sions from spatial and spectral points of view, but have not been studied very well with previous missions. The proposed observations can identify the major contributor of the X-ray emissions of the galaxy,i.e. whether it is a sum of low-mass binaries,a low-luminosity active galactic nuclei like M33, or a star burst activity. The system- atic study of the present proposal together withthe PV observations will gives us a unified understanding of X-raypopulation of normal spiral galaxies and impose a strong constraint on the origin of low- mass X-ray binaries. ******************************************************
