****************************************************** PR # 12007 We propose to observe two low luminosity early-type galaxies,NGC 4697 and NGC 1380, with ASCA for 30 and 40 ksec, respectively. Our goals are to determine the presently unknown relative contributions of discrete sources and hot gas to the X-ray emission, and measure temperatures and abundances using SIS and GIS spectra. These goals are greatly facilitated by our ROSAT PSPC images that can provide a direct measurement of the total discrete source flux through spatial fluctuation analysis. Our findings will help constrain models of supernovae heating and of the mass distribution in early-type galaxies. ******************************************************
