****************************************************** PR # 12021 We propose to observe two nearby active flare stars (Prox Cen and UV Ceti) to detect the impulsive phase of one or more flares. Three impulsive phase signatures are potentially observable with Astro-D: Fe K-alpha fluorescence lines (6.40 keV) adjacent to the Fe XXIII-XXV complex (6.63-6.97 keV),spectral signatures of a superhot (conduction front) component, or a non-thermal continuum from particle beam bremsstrahlung. We present arguments to show that one or more of these signatures will be observable if a small fraction of the total flare energy emerges in these mechanisms during the first few seconds of a flare. Coordinated ground-based observations will be scheduled around Astro-D as part of a MUSICOS flare-observer network campaign. ******************************************************
