****************************************************** PR # 12038 We propose using the ASCA detectors to study the spectrum of the galactic supernova remnant G296.1-0.7. ASCA data will be input to our standard non-equilibrium models to determine temperatures, ioniza tion timescales, abundances, masses and internal energies. Detailed spectral/spatial studies will help to determine if, as has been suggested, G296.1-0.7 is actually two overlapping SNRs. We will use ASCA data to complement our recent PSPC observations,in which we find statistically significant spectral variations within this object. A side benefit of this observation will be a phase-correlated spectral study of the binary X-ray pulsar 2S1145-619, which will be in one of the two GIS fields. ******************************************************
