****************************************************** PR # 12055 We propose to make a 40ksec exposure of the G1.5 V star pi1 UMa and a 20ksec exposure of the G9.5III star beta Cet in order to obtain high- quality ASCA spectra (4500 and 12000 cts in each SIS, respectively) of these stars, which have been selected because they are single stars and bright Xray sources. We note that few high-quality,high-resolution X-ray spectra of `normal' solar type stars, either dwarfs or giants, have previously been obtained, and argue that such data are needed to help in interpreting the X-ray spectra of the active binary stars on which previous X-ray spectroscopy have concentrated,by serving as reference spectra. We will analyse these two spectra in detail, searching for evidence for non-solar abundances and temperature stratification. ******************************************************
