****************************************************** PR # 12083 According to a body of circumstantial evidence, some AGNs control the ionization state of the material through which their spectra are seen in absorption. Known as the ``warm-absorber,''this proposed model, if true, can affect our understanding of variability, the near-nuclear environment of AGNs, and the measurement of their true intrinsic spec tra. The spectral resolution of Astro-D offers at long last the capab ility of actually seeing the absorption edges of partially ionized atoms, the defining feature of the model which has only been crudely inferred from previous,low-resolution observations. The Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516 has been specifically chosen as the object most likely to reveal the warm absorber, as the model finally faces its ``moment of truth.'' ******************************************************
