****************************************************** PR # 12109 We propose to obtain ASTRO-D observations of three bright X-ray clust ers: A85 & A2029 which show X-ray signatures of cooling gas in their central regions, and A3667 with no evidence for cooling gas. We will obtain a high-quality spectrum of each cluster core with the SIS,meas ure the cooling-flow mass deposition rate directly from emission from gas cooling through ~1 keV,place constraints on low energy absorption from accumulated cold gas, and obtain a tight upper limiton any low temperature emission from the apparently non-cooling cluster. Spatial ly resolved spectroscopy with the SIS & GIS outside the cluster core, combined with higher spatial resolution data from ROSAT to determine the gas density, will determine the iron mass, the gas mass, as well as the total mass in the clust ******************************************************
