****************************************************** PR # 12112 We propose a detailed study of the Abell cluster A194 in which the primary scientific goals are 1)to measure the abundances of the indiv idual heavy elements in both the intracluster gas and the hot coronae of the bright elliptical galaxies in A194; 2) to explore the relative importance of the heavy element production of type Ia and type II sup ernovae(including type Ib and Ic which also have massive progenitors) for the enrichment of the ICM and the galactic coronae;and 3)to deter mine the evolution of typeII and type Ia supernova rates by comparing the masses of their products measured in the ICM to that predicted by models. Such an investigation will yield a better understanding of the evolution of the supernova rate over cosmological time. ******************************************************
