****************************************************** PR # 12142 We propose an ASCA observation of the unusual binary star LSI+61 303. High-energy gamma radiation detected by both the EGRET telescope on Compton GRO and by the COS B satellite has been associated with this system. It is also a periodic, highly variable radio source. Despite numerous observations at other wavelengths the physical environment of the source is poorly understood. The diagnostic power of X-ray observations in the .2 - 10 keV band would be enormous. An ASCA obser vation would contribute substantially to understanding the details of energy release near the compact object. We propose one 20,000 second observation of the source to take place between periastron passage and the phase at which the non-thermal radio emission begins to decay. ******************************************************
