****************************************************** PR # 12180 Broad absorption lines, present in $\sim$ 10\% of quasars, are among the least understood phenomena observed in AGN.The matter responsible for these lines is highly ionized, and flows outward at large velocit ies with respect to the central engine, but the origin of its ionizat ion and velocity is still an enigma. We propose ASCA observations of 2 X-ray bright BAL quasars, expecting that the resulting spectra will allow further understanding of the location, kinematics, and density of the absorbing matter. The proposed observations will explore the unique spectral capabilities of ASCA, as,for the first time,we expect to detect and measure Doppler-broadened resonance absorption lines in addition to absorption edges due to the absorbing matter. ******************************************************
