****************************************************** PR # 12190 Utilizing the broad bandpass, large effective area, and high spectral resolution of the{\it ASCA\/}detectors,we propose to observe a small sample of nonmagnetic CVs to determine the nature of their X-ray spec tra. Assuming,as is indicated by recent measurements, that their spect ra are due to a thermal plasma,we intend to measure the strengths, wid ths,and energies of the various emission lines, and thereby determine the character of the X-ray emitting plasma, including possible distrib utions of emission measure over temperature and possible relative ele mental abundance depletions due to nuclear processing in the secondar y.We also intend to investigate the importance of photoionization to the X-ray spectra via measurements of the recombination line emission from low-ionization stages of ******************************************************
