****************************************************** PR # 12220 We propose to obtain X-ray spectra of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 335 in order to determine the nature of the soft Xray excess in this object. So far, there have been no proof that soft X-ray excesses of AGNs are due to intrinsic steepening of the X-ray spectra towards lower energ- ies rather than being an artifact of absorption by ionized medium.Mrk 335 is uniquely suited to resolve this issue as(1)strong count excess below 0.8 keV above the extrapolation of the hard X-ray power law has been observed before simultaneosly with a very low N$_H$, and (2) the soft X-ray variability is of much higher amplitude as the hard X-ray one. Furthermore,we propose to test the hypothesis that the entire X- ray spectrum is due to emission from a nonthermal $e^\pm$ source, as proposed by Turner et al.
