****************************************************** PR # 12225 BY Cam is an X-ray bright magnetic cataclysmic variable which may provide important clues to the properties of other objects of its class. It lacks a soft X-ray excess, and measurements of its iron line properties set sensitive limits on any component from fluorescen ce off of cold material.A possible explanation for this behavior is beaming of the hard X-rays,due either to limb brightening or obscurat ion, which prevents the surface of the white dwarf star from being strongly illuminated. A test of this idea, which we propose to carry out with ASCA, is to search for orbital phase variability of the iron line and low energy X-ray spectrum. ******************************************************
