****************************************************** PR # 12230 We propose ASCA observations of AM Her type systems V834 Cen and QQ Vul.In both these systems, the gas stream passes in front of the X-ray emitting region once per orbit, as evidenced by the EXOSAT soft X-ray light curves.By analyzing ASCA light curves in several energy bands, including 1--2 keV range, we can profile the cross-section of the stream several white dwarf radii away from the surface.This is currently the only direct method of probing the density structure of the accretion stream, which also determines the structure of the post-shock region where X-rays are produced. We will also perform detailed spectroscopy for the first time for these systems, particula rly of the iron line and the absorption local to the X-ray emitting region. ******************************************************
