   In observations of a field at the North Ecliptic Pole,
   previouslystudied by ROSAT, sources fainter than ~ 10^(-14) ergs
   cm^(-2) s^(-1)should be detectable with ASCA in a 160 ksec
   observation. Bysuccessively subtracting out brighter sources, and
   examining thespectra of the faint sources and fluctuations which
   remain, a greatlyimproved understanding of the origin of the diffuse
   X-ray backgroundshould be achieved.
