****************************************************** PR # 21054 In the ROSAT image of the Vela Supernova Remnant 3 extended features have been detected outside of the remnant's boundary. The symmetry of the 3 features indicates a common origin close to the Vela pulsar position, which suggests the interpretation of the shrapnels being expelled in the Vela SN explosion. The shock waves associated with their supersonic motion heat the underlying gas to X-ray temperature s. We propose to observe with ASCA the shrapnel of highest surface brightness. The size is 4 x 8 arcmin; the ROSAT count rate is 0.3 cps. With the high spectral resolution of ASCA it will be possible to det- ermine the radiation process, most likely thermal, the temperature / density / pressure distributions and eventually the abundances assoc iated with the Vela progenitor ******************************************************
