****************************************************** PR # 21508 The existence, or otherwise, of accretion disks in intermediate polars has been a controversial issue for several years. The best diagnostic to date involves the relative strength and energy dependence of hard X-ray periodicities; studies for which ASCA is ideally suited. Recent ASCA observations have yielded valuable evidence of disk accretion and some evidence of direct accretion in one system. The picture will not be clear however until the system TX Col is observed; the IP which has previously exhibited the best evidence of diskless accretion. Taken with these other studies, an ASCA observation of TX Col promises to provide a framework within which we can finally understand the accretion geometry of intermediate polars. ******************************************************
