****************************************************** PR # 21533 We propose ASCA investigations of three of the brightest clusters of galaxies in the X-ray waveband. The selected clusters have similar X- ray luminosities (Lx=8-11 x10^44 erg s^-1)but otherwise exhibit quite different characteristics. Abell 3571 is individually the brightest cluster in the Shapley Supercluster. Abell 1651 is a massive cooling flow cluster & the only cluster from the brightest30 not to have been spectroscopically observed w/Einstein Observatory, EXOSAT or GINGA. Abell 3667 is a strong candidate for a recent, massive subcluster merger event and contains a complex radio halo structure. We propose detailed investigations of thecooling flows (where present) in these clusters & of the relationship between the flows & the observed temp- erature, metallicity and homoge ******************************************************
