    We propose a phase dependent ASCA observation to obtain spectra of   
    the HD 153919/ 1700-37 supergiant X-ray binary system in the phase   
    interval 0.60-0.96 to address the following issues: 1) large-scale,  
    long-term variations in wind mass loss; 2) width and physical charac-
    teristics of the "wake" following the neutron star; 3)wind ionization
     state and chemical abundances; 4) nature of the soft thermal        
    component identified by GINGA; and 5) temporal and spectral X-ray    
    variability.
