****************************************************** PR # 22108 The SIS on ASCA is excellently suited for spectral imaging studies of SNRs because it provides a combination of good spectral resolution, imaging with moderate spatial resolution, and high sensitivity. The goals of the proposed experiment are to:(1)carry out imaging spectro- scopy of PKS 1209--52,(2)measure & identify as many atomic emission lines as possible,(3)utilize the spectra to determine chemical abun- dances & temperatures within a spatial resolution of ~5' w/in the remnant,(4)examine the spectra for departures from the standard ``equilibrium plasma'' model using 2 types of maximum entropy decon- volution & also solving the coupled ionization equations directly, & (5) perform narrow band photometry on the SNRimages searching for regions of enhanced emission. ******************************************************
