****************************************************** PR # 22112 We propose observations of the two center-bright remnants 3C400.2 and Kes 27 with the ASCA detectors. These unusual remnants show a shell structure in the radio but a center-bright structure in X-rays. Previous studies have not conclusively determined the nature of the X-ray emission. We will perform a spatially resolved spectral study of these remnants with ASCA to determine the extent to which the X-ray emission is due to thermal or nonthermal mechanisms and search for differences in the spectra from the X-ray bright central regions relative to the spectra from outer regions coincident with the radio shells. Such a study requires the good spectral resolution, broad energy coverage, and simultaneous spatial resolution available with the ASCA SIS and GIS. ******************************************************
