****************************************************** PR # 22139 At present, there is considerable uncertainty in the distribution of heavy elements in groups and clusters of galaxies. The combined spatial and spectral resolution of ASCA is ideal for investigating this problem. We propose to observe the x-ray luminous MKW4 group of galaxies has a gas temperature of 1.7~keV.The x-ray emission from gas w/$kT\sim 1-2$~keV is dominated by numerous emission lines from heavy elements. Our proposed observation will determine the abundance and spatial distribution of a number of heavy elements, including elements synthesized in both type Ia SN (e.g., Fe) and type II SN (e.g., O and Mg). This information will be used to determine the origin of heavy elements in groups of galaxies (i.e., galactic winds or ram pressure stripping). ******************************************************
