****************************************************** PR # 31005 RXJ 1838.4-0301 is a low-luminosity, variable X-ray pulsar with a pul se period of 5.45 s and an inferred magnetic field of a few 10**10 G. It is coincident with diffuse X-ray emission associated with the sup ernova remnant G 28.8+1.5. This makes it the second possible associat ion between a slow X-ray pulsar and a supernova remnant (the other be ing 1E 2259+586 and G 109.1-1.0), and the question now arises how suc h associations could form, since according to current theory supernov ae should leave rapidly rotating pulsars with strong magnetic fields. In order to elucidate the nature of RXJ1838.4-0301, and therewith th e formation process of such systems, we propose to obtain ASCA observ ations. Optical and radio observations will be/are being made as well . ******************************************************
