     We propose to obtain a 40 ksec image of the center of the Lupus 3 dar       
     k cloud, which is a nearby (140 pc) star-forming region that has low        
     extinction and is rich in low mass M-type pre-main-sequence  stars. O       
     ur objectives are: (i) to determine if the optical census of young M        
     stars in Lupus 3 is complete, (ii) to determine how the X-ray propert       
     ies of these stars vary with age and mass, (iii) to  obtain estimates       
      of flare temperatures and duty cycles in young M  stars, and (iv) to       
      identify the origin of the X-ray emission of the pair of rare young
