****************************************************** PR # 31011 According to the standard scenario, the millisecond pulsars are forme d in accreting X-ray binaries, and the globular clusters are supposed to offer the best birthplace for them. To verify the scenario, know ledge of population and lifetime of both pulsars and accreting binari es are essential. We propose an ASCA observation of M28, a medium de nsity globular cluster which contains a millisecond pulsar 1821-249. We investigate the problem in three aspects: (1) measurement the X-ra y pulsation from PSR1821-249, which has by far the largest spin-down luminosity among the recycled pulsars (emission mechanism), (2) searc h for the unknown pulsars in the cluster (population of pulsars), (3) measurement of the steady X-ray emission (population of low-luminosi ty X-ray binaries). ******************************************************
