****************************************************** PR # 31119 Why activities of nuclei of normal galaxies and active galaxies are s o different? The key to answer this question, we consider, is in LIN ER nuclei of spiral galaxies. About 85 % of Sa and Sb galaxies, and about 30% of Sc galaxies contain a LINER nucleus. The study of optic al line emission suggests that a photon source of a flat non-thermal spectrum lies at the center, though no activities have been reported in other wavelengths. If LINER is a kind of low-luminosity AGN like S eyfert II, some activity is expected to be observed in X-ray waveleng ths, in particular, in the energy band above 2 keV, where ASCA is the most powerful instrument so far. We propose to observe LINER's of s everal different levels of activities in order to clarify the X-ray a ctivity of these galactic nucl ******************************************************
