****************************************************** PR # 31130 The ROSAT All Sky Survey revealed a number of IRAS galaxies with high X-ray luminosities. Generally they have very steep soft X-ray spect ra and cannot be classified optically as active galaxies. It is propo sed to study two of these galaxies with ASCA in order to determine th e relative importance of Starburst and AGN processes in producing the ir high emission levels. An AGN component may show up at harder X-ray s, while the contribution of thermal emission associated with Starbur st can be established from the soft X-ray emission. The results of th is study are of great interest in view of the controversial explanati ons with AGN or with Starburst for various levels of activity in gala xies. ******************************************************
