****************************************************** PR # 31132 We propose to use ASCA to study the first HII type galaxy (IRAS 15564 +6359). Dramatic X-ray variability, with shortest doubling timescale of only 1500 seconds and a factor of 10 on timescales between half a day and about 1000 days, has been detected in the ROSAT energy ban d (Boller et al. 1994). The small size of the emitting region, deduce d from the rapid variations (less than about 10E-4 pc), is usually t aken as the strongest proof for an AGN. It is of great interest to s tudy the hard X-ray variability of the obscured source. Modelling of the 0.4-10keV spectrum, will give constraints on the physics of the X-ray emitting region. A combined ROSAT-ASCA spectrum will separat e the starburst from the AGN component and reveal the presence of X- ray absorption. ******************************************************
