****************************************************** PR # 31506 By studying X-ray spectra from stars of different age one can investi gate whether the larger X-ray fluxes of younger stars are due to larg er fractions of their surface covered by solar-type magnetic regions or whether the enhanced heating also produces larger coronal temperat ures and different spectra. However open cluster and star forming reg ions are typically too far away. X-ray and EUV surveys plus optical f ollow-up observations have recently discovered a number of NEARBY iso lated young stars, with ages comparable to or younger than the Pleiad es. Here we propose to observe two such stars, HD 35850 and V343 Nor, which from previous studies are known to be very active in the X-ray and UV bands. ASCA would provide crucial information on the spectral properties of these young sta ******************************************************
