****************************************************** PR # 31532 A recently discovered radio-quiet quasar, HE 1029-1401, is the brigh test member of its class at both X-ray and UV energies, but has not yet been observed with ASCA. The ROSAT spectrum of the source shows a steep power-law of index 1.3 and a soft X-ray excess, while the of f-axis Ginga spectrum gave a much harder power-law with index 0.5+/- 0.3. This strong curvature below 1 keV is inferred for many radio-qu iet quasar spectra, but its origin is still not understood. A 40 kse c ASCA observation would result in the best determined radio- quiet q uasar spectrum to date, constraining the spectral curvature, as well as allowing a detailed search for iron line down to 100 eV equivalen t width. ******************************************************
