****************************************************** PR # 32145 The spiral galaxy NGC 6946 contains an extremely luminous (10**39 ergs/s) supernova remnant discovered in a ROSAT PSPC observation. This remnant is apparently quite old (approximately 1000 years), based upon optical spectra. Only three other remnants are known that show the high X-ray luminosity; the other three are considerably younger. We propose to observe this unique remnant with the ASCA instruments. A PV pointing obtained insufficient counts for a reliable spectrum. ******************************************************
