****************************************************** PR # 32148 We propose to map the gravitational field of NGC 1332 by exploiting complementary X-ray data from ASCA and ROSAT observations; NGC 1332 is one of only two flattened early-type galaxies having known X-ray properties particularly suited to analysis of this type. We will constrain the shape of the gravitational potential and the amount of mass in the galaxy by using a method we have developed predicated on the assumptions that the X-rays result from hot gas in hydrostatic equilibrium with the galaxy potential. With the superior spectral resolution of the ASCA data we will verify these assumptions, in particular quantifying precisely the emission from discrete sources. Thus, significantly more accurate constraints on the intrinsic shape of the galaxy mass will be pos ******************************************************
