****************************************************** PR # 32152 We propose to observe five low-luminosity early-type galaxies with ASCA for 30-60 ksec. This class of objects is very poorly represented among PV phase, AO-1, and A0-2 targets despite the fact that the nature of their x-ray emission is not well understood. Our goals are to determine the presently unknown relative contributions of discrete sources and hot gas to the x-ray emission, and measure temperatures and abundances using SIS and GIS spectra. These findings will help constrain models of supernova heating and of the mass distribution in early-type galaxies. We have carefully chosen our sample to maximize the detectability of the contribution from discrete sources. Because of the poor energy resolution and small bandpass of the PSPC, ROSAT observations are insufficient ******************************************************
