****************************************************** PR # 32156 We propose ASCA observations of three bright early-type galaxies: NGC499, NGC2832, and NGC1407. The relative contributions of hot gas and X-ray binaries to the emission will be determined from the overall spectral shape. The fluxes of iron lines give a direct measure of the TypeIa SN rate, while lines from lighter elements will be used to study the chemical evolution and dynamics of gas in ellipticals. Our proposed observation of NGC499 will complement and overlap a 40 ks AO-1 pointing of NGC507 and will allow study of the intragroup gas. Both NGC499 and NGC1407 have 20 ks PSPC observations available. By combining our proposed ASCA pointings with existing ROSAT data, we can determine surface brightness distributions, temperatures, heavy element ab ******************************************************
