****************************************************** PR # 32168 Despite intensive study, the nature of the activity in LINERs remains poorly understood. Recent X-ray results suggest that at least some LINERs may contain faint AGN, but may differ from more luminous AGN in the nature of the accretion. We propose ASCA observations of two AGN-like X-ray bright LINERs in order to 1) determine at high S/N the broad band X-ray spectra, 2) spectrally separate the nuclear emission for comparison with low luminosity Seyfert galaxies, 3) search for Fe emission lines and other signs of cold material associated with a thin accretion disk, and 4) perform a sensitive search for variability at energies above 2 keV. ASCA's high sensitivity imagings pectroscopic capabilities will set tight limits on the spectral s hape and strengths of any soft ******************************************************
