****************************************************** PR # 32194 We propose to observe the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348, which is known to harbor an obscured broad line region, to test various predictions of the unified model. X-ray observations of Seyfert 2 galaxies known to harbor a Seyfert 1 nucleus are a valuable tool for testing this model because not only can we directly measure the column through the torus, we can also detect scattered soft X-ray flux and hence measure the ionization parameter and optical depth of the scattering medium. Good quality X-ray spectra currently exist for only three Seyfert 2 galaxies with known obscured BLRs. Since one of these objects, NGC 1068, is actually an anomalous member of its class, a larger sample of objects with known hidden BLRs are needed to test the general applicability of the unified m ******************************************************
