****************************************************** PR # 32195 We propose to use ASCA to make 1--10 keV observations of NGC4388 and Mkn 477; two bright Seyfert~2 galaxies which have been selected for U V spectro-polarimetry by the HST. These observations will enab le us to quantify separately (i) the scattered nuclear emission, (ii) steep soft excess and (iii) the transmitted emission (certainly in N GC4388, possibly in Mkn 477) from optically-hidden Seyfert~1 nuclei, yielding a direct measure of the scattering efficiency and column den sity along our line-of-sight. We shall also examine the effects of or ientation on the column density, scattered fraction and presence of F e K alpha emission in our sample. ******************************************************
