****************************************************** PR # 32227 The detection of gamma-ray emission from 3C279, and subsequently from some 30 OVV quasars, was one of the great discoveries of the Compton GRO. While Comptonization is the most likely mechanism for the gamma-rays, the source of the soft photons is still a mystery: are they Comptonized synchrotron photons, produced in the same jet as the gamma-rays (as in Synchrotron-self-Compton models), or is it Comptonized external, diffuse ultraviolet radiation? The simultaneous X-ray/gamma-ray observations provide such a crucial test, specifically as to the nature of the break between the X-ray and gamma-ray regimes. We propose Asca observations of an object CTA 102, to be coordinated with the EGRET GRO (for which we have an approved observation), to test ******************************************************
