****************************************************** PR # 32257 The radio-loud, X-ray bright quasar B2 1028+313 is located in the central dominant galaxy of the cluster A1030 at z=0.177. The quasar is surrounded by extended X-ray emission and optical emission line gas due to a cluster cooling flow. We propose an ASCA observation of the X-ray emission from the quasar and the surrounding intracluster gas. The spectra will be used to separate the X-rays from the quasar and the cluster. We will make the first attempt to detect resonance X-ray absorption lines due to the intracluster gas in the spectrum of a quasar. Such lines are expected to be strong for a quasar at the center of a cooling flow. This will allow an independent determination of the distance to the cluster. We will also study the origin of the soft excess in t ******************************************************
