****************************************************** PR # 32262 We propose to measure the gas temperature and iron abundance in the distant (z=0.41), rich cluster CL0939+4713 (A851), which has a large population of blue galaxies. HST images show that many of these galaxies are undergoing tidal interactions or mergers (Dressler et al. 1994). The X-ray ``double cluster'' morphology and X-ray lu minosity of CL0939+47 suggest that it is still undergoing si gnificant dynamical evolution. An ASCA observation of CL0939+47 wh ich will determine the temperature and the iron abundance in the IC M will allow direct comparisons to these parameters measured for th e sample of more X-ray luminous distant clusters as well as the sa mple of present epoch clusters. These comparisons will determine th e timescales for heavy element ******************************************************
