****************************************************** PR # 41165 The ``soft excess'' is a very common feature in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies. Nevertheless no unifying interpretative scheme has been assessed up to now. We propose to observe ESO198-G24 because it has a strong and variable soft excess. ESO198-G24 is a typical Seyfert 1 which s hows dramatic flux changes at different wavelenghts. ROSAT revealed a factor of 3 variation of flux in two 6-months separated observations, and correlated variability of the soft-excess. However, the quality of the ROSAT data do not allow to distinguish between a variation of a "warm absorber" or a variation of a soft continuum emission (e.g. a black-body emission). These results concur in making ESO198-G24 a very attracting target to investigate the soft X-ray properties of Seyfert 1 with ASCA. ******************************************************
