****************************************************** PR # 42009 ASCA and EUVE coronal spectra and photospheric studies of RS CVn's and Algols suggest they are metal-poor relative to the Sun by factors of ~2-10. This does not fit with their ages of ~2-3 Gyr or less. Unlike the RS CVn's and Algol's observed by ASCA to-date, sig Gem and lam And - the two brightest long period RS CVn's in the X-ray sky - do not have composite spectra. ASCA observations of these stars will reveal unambiguously if their coronae have the same metal abundances as their photospheres, and will pin down the origin of the anomalously strong continua seen in their EUVE spectra. ASCA spectra will also provide the first coronal comparison between synchronized (sig Gem) and asynchronous (lam And) RS CVn's. No "classical" long period RS CVn's have been observed by ASCA to-date. ******************************************************
