****************************************************** PR # 42019 ASCA observations of star formation regions in dark (molecular) clouds have demonstrated the power and utility of X-ray spectroscopy of embedded T Tauri stars (TTS). A major difficulty with analysis of the extant data, however, is the large hydrogen column through dark clouds and the likely presence of multiple sources within the ASCA point spread function. Also, it is increasingly apparent that a significant number of TTS are located far from cloud cores. We propose to obtain ASCA spectra of nearby TTS that are several degrees from the nearest dark clouds and other young stars. The proposed observations will yield the first unobscured X-ray spectra of individual TTS, and in so doing, will shed light on the origin and nature of isolated TTS. ******************************************************
