****************************************************** PR # 42057 Gamma Cas was the first Be star to be discovered and has been extensively studied in the optical for over 100 years. It is also a well-known X-ray source and is thought to contain a compact object - based mainly on its similarity to X Per. However, unlike other members of the Be/neutron star class, a strong iron line has been detected in the X-ray spectrum of gamma Cas. Here we propose to study this line in detail utilizing the excellent spectral resolution of the SIS detectors. We request that this observation be made as close as possible to scheduled XTE, HST, IUE and ground based observations. ******************************************************
