****************************************************** PR # 42102 We propose ASCA observations of three bright early-type galaxies: NGC1395, NGC1553, and NGC4756. The relative contributions of hot gas and X-ray binaries to the emission will be determined from the overall spectral shape. The fluxes of iron lines give a direct measure of the Type Ia SN rate, while lines from lighter elements will be used to study the chemical evolution and dynamics of the gas. NGC1395 and NGC1553 have very deep ROSAT PSPC and HRI images, which will be combined with our ASCA pointings to determine surface brightness distributions, temperatures, heavy element abundances, and virial masses. The surface brightnesses, temperatures, and abundances will tell us whether the gas in ellipticals is in steady-state or is expanding (subsonically or in a wind). ******************************************************
