****************************************************** PR # 42118 We propose an Asca observation of NGC 5506, one of the brightest Narrow-Line X-ray Galaxies, to be scheduled simultaneously with our approved XTE observation. This object, not yet observed by ASCA, shows spectral structure in the ROSAT data, which is best interpreted as a combination of neutral and ionized absorption, a unique property among NLXG. This object is rapidly variable, on a time scale of 10 ks; the ASCA data should allow us to track the variability of the level of ionization of the absorber as a function of its X-ray flux. The observation will also allow us to study the details of its strong (150 eV EW) Fe K line, and, together with the details of the low energy absorption, determine the relationship of NLXGs to Seyferts, and the Unified Schemes in general. ******************************************************
